If you have not checked your furnace yet this fall, take a look at what kind you might have. There are three different types of gas burning heating furnaces out there right now in most homes, Natural Draft, Forced Draft 80% and Forced Draft 90%.
Today I will be talking about the Natural Draft furnace which is the least efficient and an obsolete type but is in most homes. They have a steel flue pipe for venting the toxic gas and use a pilot fired ignition system. They also use the surrounding air around your furnace for combustion so make sure you don’t have flammables in and around that area. These furnaces are anywhere between 18-30 years of age and most have a cast iron heat exchanger and are usually depending on age 40%-65% efficient. Meaning its using anywhere between 40%-65% of the gas and the rest goes to the outside via the chimney. So between your gas water heater and furnace check your fuel bills this winter and really see what you’re spending. Next week I will be talking about the 80% forced draft furnaces.
